Sew ¼” from previous seam line. Press Seam allowance to one side. Measure ½” from raw edge. Clip seam allowance. Measure 4 ½” from raw edge. Clip seam allowance. Press seam allowance between clips in opposite direction. Fold ½” up from raw edge. Press. Fold up another 4” and press.
Turn right side out. Press seams. Pin hem allowance in place from the right side, pinning perpendicular to fold.
Change to contrasting thread. On the sewing machine, measure 3 ¾” to the right of the needle and place a piece of masking tape across bed of sewing machine. Adjust setting on sewing machine to sew decorative stitch or top stitch. Place fold of hem edge under needle, with fold on edge of tape. Use tape as your guide as you stitch the hem. As an alternative, especially if you have a piece of fabric that is shorter than 33 ½”, add a band of contrasting fabric at the hem.
